Normal people can make cool stuff! And that's what Woody Sobey, visiting
performance scientist, engineer, maker and education director at the Discovery
Center of Idaho, will share with central SD next week.
Sobey, invited by the SD Discovery Center and the SD 21st
Century Community Learning Centers, will conduct a variety of workshops,
conference sessions and meetings to help kids, educators and the rest of us,
explore our DIY-selves.
Sunday night from 4-6pm SD Discovery Center member families
will engineer with Woody to create everything from musical instruments to motor
boats. The event is free to SDDC
members, but other can join that night.
Monday and Wednesday Sobey will help kids explore the
Science of Sound. He will inspire kids to
make all kinds of noise makers and musical instruments to create wild and wacky
sounds. There is still room in the
Monday afternoon class, 1pm to 4pm. Call
the SD Discovery Center at 224-8295 to register. $10 for members and $12 for non-members.
Tuesday Woody is a keynote speaker for the SD Department of
Education 21st Century Community Learning Centers conference. “What can’t you do with paper?” asks
Sobey. During his first session he will
demonstrate a variety of activities useful in teaching things from Newtonian
mechanics to the history of the earth, all with paper. Later in the day he will present “Rocket
Science for All” an exploration of physics and mathematics with stomp rockets. For more information about the conference,
contact Sue.Burgard@state.sd.us.
Are a normal person that wants to make cool
stuff? Do you want to consider how we
can get more people in central SD to make cool stuff? Or do you make cool stuff and want to network with others who make cool stuff, too? Then you are invited to meet with Sobey at 7:30am on Thursday morning at the SD Discovery Center. Sobey will share the Maker Movement and how that can enhance DIY, education and economic development in our area. SDDC will serve donuts, fruit and coffee at this event.
