Upcoming Workshops

The SD Discovery Center has two exciting workshops for teachers and out of school program staff.

Grades 3-8 Earth Systems is a weekend workshop focused on connecting kids to the Earth. Participants will receive high quality curriculum resources from Project WET, the Leopold Education Project and Project Learning Tree. Planning time will be allocated to strategize how to integrate material into your class or program.

K-5 Natural Resources is a 5 week blended learning opportunity via DDN and online. Participants will receive resources from SD Ag in the Classroom, Project WET, Project Learning Tree, and Project WILD. Class does not meet Feb 16.

Geography of Watersheds Professional Development

Space is still available in Geography of Watersheds, a field based professional development opportunity for middle and high school teachers. The South Dakota Discovery Center and the South Dakota Geographic Alliance, the state affiliate of National Geographic, are partnering on this hands-on, cross curricular experience.
  • Learn how to make student generated maps with ARC GIS Online using hand-held devices to collect and upload data.
  • Spend a day in the classroom and three days/two nights in the field paddling the Cheyenne River collecting data.
  • Trip is completely outfitted. No gear required but a sense of adventure.
  • 2 credits (pending)
  • $65 non-refundable deposit plus credit fees.

There is still space in our exciting, field based workshop in partnership with the South Dakota Geographic Alliance. We will be learning low tech and high tech mapping activities including how to map our field studies along the Cheyenne River.

We will be spending three days/two nights paddling the Cheyenne, doing field studies and creating content for a map. We will be outfitted so no gear is necessary but a sense of adventure is! Registration info

Geography of Watersheds: A Field Based Professional Development Opportunity

The Geography of Watersheds is a field based professional development opportunity offered in partnership with the South Dakota Geographic Alliance. Join us for one day in the classroom and three days/two nights in the field exploring the geography of the Cheyenne River through field studies (flows permitting). Our field session will be outfitted on this trip. No gear or experience necessary but a sense of adventure is! 
Dates: June 9-12
Location: Pierre
Audience: Middle school/high school teachers. Cross curricular in nature.

Cost: $65 (non-refundable)
