BLACK LIGHT ART WORKSHOP FOR KIDS THIS WEEKEND
Local Students to Work with Professional Artist
Visual Artist Bob H. Miller will conduct workshops for local students as part of the SD Arts Council's Artists in Schools & Communitiese program. The artist will work with various grade levels during the residency in Pierre at the SD Discovery Center this weekend, April 27 - 29.
The Healthy Communities/Healthy Youth Kids Helping Kids organization is coordinating two workshops. Sixth - tenth graders with participate on Friday, April 27 from 6-11pm at the SD Discovery Center. Pizza and snacks will be served. Third -Sixth graders (Sixth graders can choose which workshop suits them.) will participate in a two-day workshop starting Saturday, April 28 from Noon to 3pm and resuming on Sunday, April 29 from 1-3pm. The 3rd - 6th grades must attend both days.
During both camps student, led by Miller, will create works of art that glow under black lights. Kids Helping Kids members will add to the fun by leading glowing science experiments - glowing slime, glowing worms and glowing explosions.
Registration is open but limited to 20 students per workshop. To register call 224-8295 or stop by the SD Discovery Center. These workshops are free. They are sponsored by a HC/HY Turner Grant with support from the SD Dakota Arts Council with funds from the State of South Dakota, through the Department of Tourism and State Development, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Artist Bob H. Miller grew up in Pierre, SD and now lives in Spearfish. He has always had an intense interest in science and technology and their application to image making. The office copy machine, the instant Polaroid camera, photograms, holograms and the pinhole camera have all played a part in his development as an artist. Miller tries to incorporate the theories and tools of science into his residencies, using fundamental drawing and painting instruction, basic animation, collage and batik. Miller has worked with students of South Dakota for longer than 30 years through the Artists in Schools & Communities program.
