Couch to Crouch: Start Today!

Spring is the perfect time to start or step up your quest to be more fit!

We are 10 weeks out from the Oahe Days run with Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch. Start a 9 week Couch to 5K training program today and you will be ready to run (or even walk) with Eric in June.

Download this podcast to your MP3 player or phone and hit the trail 3 times this coming week. The podcast provides you a personal trainer to coach you through your workouts.

Important points.
  • Invest in good shoes. They are a must.
  • Run in a safe place. Hilger’s Gulch, the play trail, and the bike path along the river offer a good trail and nice views.
  • Take at least one day’s break between training. You need to recover.
  • Read more about training for a 5K.
And don't be shy! Tell us how it's going by posting your updates and pictures to Facebook and Twitter. Tag it #couchtocrouch. We want to cheer you on!

Eric Crouch to Appear at Oahe Days

Eric Crouch, former Nebraska Cornhusker quarterback and 2001 Heisman trophy winner, is coming to Pierre for appearances at Oahe Days on Saturday June 21.

His visit is arranged by the Let’s Move committee, a local network dedicated to community wellness and housed at the SD Discovery Center.  Eric will be participating in the Oahe Days race organized by the Pierre Area Running Club (PARC).

Eric Crouch will also appear at the Steamboat Park amphitheater on that Saturday. He will be available for a meet and greet afterwards at the South Dakota Discovery Center booth which will feature pieces from the Let’s Move traveling exhibit.

Brad Curtis, president of the Oahe Days organizing committee, says this will be a good attraction for the event.

Art Smith of PARC will be leading a Couch to 5K class geared to new runners to train those who would like to run with Eric.  The class meets three times weekly starting Tuesday April 8 and culminates with the Oahe Days race. Registration is through the YMCA.

Those with questions may contact Art directly at artsmith12830@yahoo.com (or via cell at 222.7588 if no email). Participants may start as late as 4/15 but only with prior approval.

Anne Lewis, Let’s Move committee member, says when it comes to fitness that showing is better than telling and doing is better than showing. “Our hope is that people will be motivated to start or step up their fitness program so they can participate in the race with Eric.”

Race director Dan Propst says the race is open to both runners and walkers.

Lewis says that Eric Crouch, who was an exercise science major and owns a recreation products and equipment company, is excited about coming to Pierre. “This is a good opportunity for families to work on fitness together”, says Lewis. “It’s going to be a fun day.”
